A working group from various institutions - Joint Clinical Research Center, Mulago University Hospital, Uganda Blood Transfusion Institute, Uganda Cancer Institute - strives to create the conditions for bone marrow / stem cell transplantation in Uganda. Technical help from German specialists led by Prof. Dr. med. Renate Arnold, emeritus director of the bone marrow transplant unit at the Charité University Clinic Berlin.

The first indication is sickle cell anemia, which is common in Africa. Sickle cell anemia is a congenital disease in which the red blood cells deform in a crescent shape. Multiple - possibly 4-5 times a month - severe bone pain occurs. As a result, organ damage occurs over the years, leading to death in the first three to four decades of life. The only way to cure is by bone marrow transplant.
